Sustainable piers for Bonaire
For projects in the Caribbean islands, we design, manufacture, and deliver steel structures for piers, catering to both new construction and renovation needs. These piers are essential for dive resorts and private clients and are subjected to harsh conditions. The combination of the salty marine climate and the force of waves calls for innovative solutions, smart design details, and high quality. To protect these piers, we developed special wave impact flaps. These flaps can be opened to allow waves to pass through freely, preserving the integrity of the pier and extending its lifespan.
Our design stands out by maximizing the reuse of existing foundations, which is essential to protect the surrounding coral reefs. Our ‘Coral Friendly’ design minimizes disruption and pollution of the underwater environment during construction and in long-term use. Additionally, we use sustainable materials and preservation methods that take both the coral and marine environment into account.
Test assembly and local expertise
Before shipping our structures to Bonaire, we conduct a 100% test assembly, fully assembling the steel structure in our workshop to ensure that everything fits and functions well on-site. This is done in close coordination with the local partner who handles the installation. Their expertise in maritime stability, crane operations, and floating equipment is essential to ensure smooth installation. We also account for container dimensions (containerized designs), intended on-site installation methods, and local conditions in our designs.
Permits and corrosion resistance
At Rijnstaal, we adhere to the highest standards, including Eurocodes, specific Rijkswaterstaat, and BES codes (local regulations for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba). This means we not only provide steel structures but also supply all relevant documentation to support the permitting process, streamlining it for our clients.
Our designs are also corrosion-resistant. We incorporate intelligent detailing and connections to minimize corrosion, significantly extending the lifespan of the structures, which is especially important in the Caribbean’s salty climate.
More than just steel
When designing a pier or other steel structures, we offer a range of additional options. These include bollards, swim ladders, lighting provisions, and fender systems. Upon request, we can also calculate and supply wooden components (decking, beams, etc.), giving clients a comprehensive solution that meets their needs and complements the environment.
Other projects on Bonaire
Beyond piers, we’ve completed various other projects on Bonaire. For Boat Yard Bonaire, we delivered boat cradles and stands, and we designed a special frame for transporting catamarans. At Buddy Dive Bonaire Resort, we designed and supplied steel structures ready-to-install for elements such as the canopy over Blennies restaurant.
For Plaza Beach and Dive Resort, we designed and supplied the beautiful bridge to the new villa island, meeting the client’s strict design specifications.
Whether on land or at sea, Rijnstaal provides complete solutions for both commercial and private clients.
