A Unique Hoisting Shed for the Zalmhaven Tower

Civiele Techniek deBoer BV, in collaboration with BAM Bouw en Techniek, was tasked with developing a solution for the Zalmhaven Tower’s construction that adhered to strict safety standards and met the required functionalities. Our hoisting shed concept from 2011 was the perfect answer, now further developed for this project. A hoisting shed functions as both a crane and a safety feature for the construction method. In essence, the hoisting shed is a temporary factory hall elevated to the building’s height, equipped with cranes for the vertical transport of materials. This allows construction materials to be quickly and safely moved from the ground up. The hoisting shed cranes are also used during the construction of each floor. The hoisting shed for the Zalmhaven Tower also accommodates all necessary site facilities such as break rooms, toilets, and power supply, enabling smooth high-altitude construction operations. Rijnstaal produced the entire “construction machine” for this project.

Safety and Flexibility on the Construction Site

One of the key features of the hoisting shed is its safety. The hoisting shed is tightly sealed to the building’s facade, eliminating any risk of falling materials or people. Weather impacts, no matter the height, are mostly eliminated. The hoisting zone, where all materials are lifted outside the building, is fixed and stationary, reducing the required safety zone to a minimum. This allowed us to minimize environmental disturbance in both public spaces and on the construction site, which is crucial for the progress of the project in the densely populated city center of Rotterdam. The hoisting shed was thus perfectly suited for urban high-rise projects where space is limited.

A Modular and Reusable Construction Solution

Not only was the hoisting shed a safe solution for the Zalmhaven Tower, but its design is also modular. This means the hoisting shed can be adapted and reused for future high-rise projects. This flexibility makes it a sustainable solution for construction companies working on challenging high-rise projects in urban settings. Furthermore, our hoisting shed is the only one in the world designed for high-rise construction in this way, an achievement that Rijnstaal is extremely proud of.
